CHAPTER 27

At first, Dylan too had fumbled with the controls on the digital editing bay.

“Not so easy, is it?” Connor had joked, to which she had replied, “Shut it.”

Now they were cruising through the footage with ease.

Somebody held a clapboard in front of the camera, indicating this was Scene 27, Take 4, and snapped it shut. Then Chris charged through the bank doors wearing diamond-shaped sunglasses and a red overcoat long enough to sweep the floor.

Maria yelled “Cut!” from offscreen.

There was a momentary flash, then, faster than Connor could snap his fingers, the scene started over: another clapboard (indicating they were on Take 5) and Chris once again came charging through the door, this time carrying a Glock in each hand.

He fired one of the guns at the ceiling. “This is a robbery!”

“Cut!” Maria shouted. “Punchier next time.”

The scene reset again. Chris came back in, fired his gun at the ceiling, and declared, “This is a robbery!” with more drama than before.

“Cut! Is that really the best we can do?”

This time, the camera did not stop rolling. Connor and Dylan watched Maria step into view, where she huddled with Chris and a man wearing a plaid button-down. Connor knew from his interviews that third person was the cinematographer.

“I don’t know why anyone would want to be an actor,” Dylan said. “Reshooting the same scene over and over. It seems incredibly tedious.”

Connor didn’t respond. He was focusing all his attention on the conversation happening on the screen. Most of it was hard to understand, but he got the impression they were brainstorming alternatives to Chris’s line. Eventually, Maria threw up her hands and said, “Fine. We’ll make it work as is.”

Then another reset, another clapboard, and they began again.

This time, the scene continued uninterrupted. Chris charged in, fired his gun at the ceiling, and declared this was a robbery. Extras screamed and ducked. Chris fired at the tellers on the far ends of the counter. Blood exploded from their chests as they fell to the ground.

“Those must be the squibs Marty was telling us about,” Connor said.

Chris removed a garbage bag from his back pocket and placed it in front of the only teller still standing. “Fill it up.” When the teller did not move, he repeated the command: “Fill it up, Brittany!”

After she sprang into action, Chris turned his attention back to the extras. “We don’t need any heroes here, you got it? This is all going to be over in seconds. Nobody needs to get hurt.”

The teller placed the garbage bag, now full, back on the counter.

Chris tipped an imaginary hat. “Thank you, ma’am.” Then he grabbed his bag and, as he made his way out the door, a voice from off-camera said, “You know I’m not letting you leave with the money.”

The camera panned out to reveal Luke Cross on the opposite side of the bank, dressed in a pinstriped suit. He, too, had a gun.

“Try it,” Chris said. “I dare you.”

Then Luke looked straight at the camera. “He dared me.
